POSING GUIDE
Option 1A & 2A
The student is looking for a great headshot for the yearbook.
Use the UG crop lines (at the top the hair and the chin), but you can be creative with angles or poses.
Image can still be used as a yearbook headshot if the subject is leaning on their arms.
Option 4A
This is a blend of a few headshots and three-quarter poses.
Crop guidelines are similar to Personality Portraits (Crop at the top of the head and the knee).
Posing can be more creative with angles, and interacting with surrounding.
Poses may consist of crossing arms, hands in pocket and can also include sitting or leaning poses.
Option 6A
This is an extension of Option 4A
It offers more poses and includes premium retouching
Branch out and take a few headshots with them looking past you, slightly off camera, tilted down, laughing, etc
Option 12A
This is an extension of Option 6A
12 images will be taken. You choose your yearbook photo. This image will be premium retouched which removes all blemishes, stray hairs as well as whitens eyes and teeth
Standing Poses
Start off straight on with one knee bent, feet together, and hand on hip
To accentuate a slimmer frame, push the chin forward and tilt it slightly down at the same time with the shoulder up
Look over the shoulder at camera
Look over both shoulders with hand on the hip
Always try to pose with ANGLES! This will give your subject a more flattering portrait.
Vary placement of hands: behind, front in pockets, cross arms, etc
Avoid arms falling straight down at sides
Cross ankles and pop hip out, place hands on smallest part of waist and keep shoulders down
Sitting Poses
Shoot at a downward angle, which is flattering for most people
Angle chin slightly towards the camera
Images can be cropped tightly focusing on the eyes and the smile
Crossed-legged lean - rest elbow on knee and prop chin on closed fist, while leaning forward
Propped elbow - one knee up and one foot tucked behind. Place hand on ankle and other wrapped around propped knee.
Stair Pose - Keep knees together and put one foot a step higher while keeping toes toward each other. Lean forward with one hand resting on knee.
Leaning Poses
Allows the subject to be a little more comfortable.
Use this pose to capture 3/4 body shots.
Press shoulders “down to the ground”; make sure shoulders aren’t hunched.
Avoid having the subject “falling in” to their shoulders.
Posing with props
Allows the subject to be a little more comfortable.
Use this pose to capture 3/4 body shots.
Use sporting equipment to show movement.
Allows the student to be creative and show their personality
REMINDERS & TIPS
When photographing seniors remember to put the students at ease, establish a friendly relationship, allow them to be themselves and have fun. Communicate honestly, respectfully, and engage with seniors to create a positive environment. By doing so you will ensure the best experience for the students. Let them know that you will be helping and directing them throughout the process.
Basic Posing Tips
Position Subject at an ANGLE - This will slim the subject and emphasize the S curve
Shoot Downwards - Softens facial features and creates a slimming effect
Good Posture
Show Them How - Direct them by using yourself as an example, this will put them at ease
Use Your Hands - Create a softer or more dramatic look to your images by posing hands
Verbal Cues
Roll against your (left) shoulder towards me
Separate your (right) shoulder away from the wall
Lean a tiny bit towards me
Pop your knee out
Use your hand to shape your body/leg/arm
Pay attention to details:
Hair - Watch for stray pieces of hair. Experiment with variations of hair behind or in front of the shoulders.
Eyes - Make sure pupils are visible and avoid whites of the eyes.
Nose - The nose will look larger if the tip goes past the face and into the background. If you spot the nose behind the cheek-line, make the angle a bit less extreme to correct.
Chin - Avoid double chins.
Shoulders and Hips - Angle slightly away from the camera for the most flattering poses.
Feet - Bend at the knee and place weight on back foot for full body pose.
Odd Crops - Don’t crop at the joints.
Posture - Keep seniors comfortable, but avoid slouching.
Take note of the student’s interest level in the shoot. Allow them to make suggestions and/or requests.
AFTER PICTURE DAY
After picture day, the senior will receive a proof sent to their house as well as an electronic invitation to order.
Proofs are sent to the customer 10-14 days after it checks into the lab.
RETAKE DAY PROCEDURES
All seniors are allowed to retake poses regardless of purchasing
Retake day images will be added to their already existing online gallery so they will be able to see ORG and RTK day images
Students will use the same order key for retake day ordering
The yearbook deadline for yearbook selection is the retake day
After the session, ask students to select their yearbook pose. CTRL + I to select yearbook pose
